The section defined between two successive multiplexers is known as the Multiplex Section and is managed by the MSOH (Multiplex Section Overhead) of the basic STM-N frame. The MSOH bytes let the network be monitored and give warnings about errors. If the error is a serious one such as loss of signal, alternative routes can be found that restore the communication. A specific protocol can also be used that allows multiplexers to be controlled remotely.
