In 1988 the CCITT (now ITU) proposed creating a new broadband network based on the already exisiting broadband ISDN. This network, called B-ISDN, would have to allow the simultaneous transmission of data, voice, video and multimedia over common transmission infrastructures. It was against this backdrop that this first recommendations relating to SDH appeared, taking SONET as their starting point.
