Introduction

Two events hastened the development of SDH: the anti-trust law for the telecommunications sector in the USA and the definition of B-ISDN. The former was the catalyst for the development of SDH, while the latter provided the motivation behind it. The SDH hierarchy would allow for the implementation of broadband networks through a reference model that provided mechanisms not only for transporting information, but also for the management and control of this transport. These networks were to provide new circuits to the public communications networks and help them offer new and advanced services while guaranteeing the quality of the communications.
