Multiplexing techniques form the basis
for taking full advantage of the capacity available in contemporary telephone networks,
which are capable of simultaneously transmitting signals in a high number of channels.
This section describes different multiplexing techniques, one of which will be the one
used to make up the signals that form the PDH hierarchy.
