It was in the 60s, 70s and 80s that digital communications came to the fore, both in
the transmission of signals and in switching, and since then telecommunications have
become progressively more digital. What reasons are there to justify this changeover to
digital communications, when these have mainly been analog since before the start of the 20th
century?
In this section we will look at some of the advantages of digitalizing signals,
together with some of the disadvantages.
