Introduction: Properties of Transmission Lines

Transmission line theory is a complex subject and many books have been written about it. It is outside the scope of this module to cover the complete theory, but there are some properties of transmission lines which need to be understood in some detail in order to be able to undertake qualification of lines for use by xDSL services.

This section describes these properties, explains how they are important to xDSL transmission and defines some measurements which can be made to assess the quality of lines.

  •      Line Equivalent Circuit
  •      Characteristic Impedance
  •      Impedance Matching
  •      Return Loss
  •      Insertion Loss
  •      Longitudinal Balance
  •      Crosstalk
